Q&A WITH SHEILA RONNING

How far in advance should women start thinking about the skills we need to be on a corporate board? I say that it is never too early to start the journey towards the boardroom. Women should know their skill-sets, know what boards are looking for and fill in any gaps they have while they still have the opportunity to. But most certainly, women should seek a corporate board seat while still holding an executive post because that is when you are most attractive.

Any tips on how to decide which company's board would be a good fit? You need to be realistic about what size of corporate board you are seeking. For example, if you aren't or haven't been in the C-suite of a F500, you are most likely not going to be a good candidate for those boards. But the good news is that there are thousands of other companies.
